The Resident's Key
The Resident’s Key is a numbered keepsake in solid brass, made for one dog. It comes as a gift with the Commission Deposit, the first step of every commission, and it is yours to keep.

What the Key is
- A numbered keepsake in solid brass, made for your dog
- It comes as a gift with your Commission Deposit, and it is yours to keep
- On a Private Residence, it fits the brass-lined keyhole in the latch, though nothing on the residence locks with a key

Your dog’s Resident Number is written into the Registry, our record of every residence and the dog it was made for. The number is engraved on the Key, and it is never given to anyone else.
Your dog’s name can be engraved on it too, if you would like.
An Open Residence has no doors and no latch, and its Key means just the same.
The Commission Deposit
- $250 Canadian, or $200 US in the United States
- It comes off the price of your residence in full
- A full refund if you ask within 90 days, before your residence goes to the workshop

If you ask within 90 days, the deposit comes back to you in full. After 90 days it stays as a credit toward your residence, and it never expires.
Once your residence goes to the workshop and making begins, the deposit is part of the price and can no longer be refunded. The Key is yours to keep, whatever you decide. The full terms are in our Refund Policy.
Your Resident Number
- Your dog’s Resident Number, engraved on the Key
- Written into the Registry, our record of every residence
- It does not set a build or delivery date

Your deposit gives your dog a Resident Number, written into the Registry and never given to anyone else. Residences are made in the order designs are approved, so the families who are ready first go to the bench first. There is no deadline to finish your design.
The First Residents will hold Keys 001 through 050, the Atelier’s opening group, and it is a designation that will not be repeated. Joining the Atelier List does not give a Key or a place among them.
What happens next
- The Key ships within five business days of your deposit, in its box with a wax-sealed Welcome Card
- You tell us about your dog and your room in the Resident Profile, without waiting for the Key
- You choose your design when you are ready

After the deposit, you tell us about your dog and the room it will live in. We check the size against your dog and quote delivery to your door before you choose your design, whenever you are ready.
Every step is on How a commission works.
Giving the Key
- The Key can be a gift
- They choose everything later, in their own time
- You can add a Residence Credit toward their residence

You place the deposit, and the Key arrives boxed and ready to give. They tell us about their dog and choose everything themselves, whenever they are ready.
You can add a Residence Credit to the Key, in any amount from $250 Canadian or $200 US, up to the price of the residence. It can only be spent on a residence, and it stays with their household.
Like the deposit, it can be refunded to you within 90 days, and after that it stays as a credit that never expires. Once the residence goes to the workshop, it is part of the price.
Looking after the Key
- The brass is left bare, so it darkens where it is held
- A replacement can be made by request, with the same Resident Number
- It is free if the mistake was ours

Your Key is solid brass with no lacquer, so it will darken and soften in colour wherever it is held most. That is brass doing what brass does, and a card in the box explains it. A soft cloth and a little brass polish will bring back the shine if you want it.
If your Key is ever lost or damaged, or you would like it engraved again, the Atelier can make a replacement by request, with the same Resident Number. Ask us for the price. If the mistake was ours, such as an engraving error, the replacement is free.
The Key is a keepsake, so it is not covered by the residence warranty. These are its terms.
When commissions open
The Resident’s Key arrives with the first commissions. Join the Atelier List and we will email you the day they open, with pricing and how to begin. Joining is free, and it does not reserve a commission or give a Resident Number.
