Specifications

Everything we can tell you with a straight face, and a short list of the things we cannot tell you yet. Where a figure is still being confirmed, it is not on this page. Where one is calculated rather than measured off a finished residence, we say so. We would rather leave a gap, or show our working, than fill either with an estimate you might plan a room around.

The eight sizes

Measurements are in inches, exterior, length by width by height, and exclude the base skirt. Footprint is the floor the residence actually occupies. For fit guidance — interior room, bed dimensions, how to measure your dog — see the size guide.

Six sizes are released today. Grand and Estate are fully specified and shown here at full size, but not yet released for sale — a production-sequencing decision on our side, not a bespoke tier, and both will release at their catalogue prices once ready. No launch date is published or implied for either.

Two interior heights are given because one would mislead. The roof is an arch, not a flat lid, so the tallest point sits on the centreline and the room at the side walls is lower. Both figures are measured from the interior floor, before the Dream Bed goes in; subtract the bed — 4.25 in on Petite and Small, 5.25 in on Demi, Medium and Midi, 7 in on Large, Grand and Estate — for the room your dog actually has above it. Anyone quoting a single interior height for an arched residence is quoting the best number, not the useful one.

Both heights are calculated from the locked size chart rather than measured off a finished residence. The geometry is settled and the arithmetic is simple, so we are confident enough to print them. The side wall figure is the one that could still move, because the floor sits on cleats, and it is confirmed against the first residence built at each size. If it moves, the figure here moves with it.

Getting it into the room

A residence this size has to travel through a household doorway before it ever reaches the room it will live in. The figures below are the minimum doorway width each size needs, measured two ways: with the door slab temporarily removed from its hinges, and left hung in place.

Figures are nominal door sizes, not raw arithmetic — each is rounded up to the nearest size a household door actually comes in. Most interior doors clear the "slab removed" figure without trouble; a standard 30-in interior door, hung, will not pass a Midi or larger. Estate does not pass hung at any standard size: the slab has to come off. If you are unsure which figure applies to your home, ask the Concierge before you order — moving a residence back out through a doorway it does not fit is not a good first day for it.

Materials, by component

Finish

The finish system is zero to low-VOC, and we would rather hand you the numbers than the adjective. Where a residence is painted, the colour coat is a zero-VOC paint that meets the CDPH 01350 emissions standard. The clear sealants over it are waterborne and low-VOC, measured on the material as supplied at 59 grams of volatile organic compounds per litre on exterior surfaces and 62 on the interior surfaces your dog actually lives against. Both reach full cure in ten to fourteen days. No residence leaves the Atelier until at least fourteen days have passed since its final coat, which is a scheduling inconvenience we accept on purpose.

The brass is left bare where your dog meets it directly — no lacquer, no coating, a living finish that deepens with the household it joins. Only a few pieces set deep inside, closest to where your dog rests, carry a clear protective seal.

Construction

The side walls are true frame-and-panel work: two stiles, two rails, and a floating panel held in a groove, the same joinery used in fine cabinet doors, so the wood can move with the seasons without cracking. Frame stock is rift- and quarter-sawn because that grain roughly halves seasonal movement. Each panel is set under gentle preload, so the walls cannot rattle under a lean, a closing door or a bump. Left and right walls are grain-matched as a pair before assembly, and no glue line is allowed to cross a window.

From inside there is no visible hardware at all — no hinge and no screw, at dog height or any height. The reveal around each wall panel is a cabinetmaker's shadow-gap on the outside and nearly flush on the inside, so there is no ledge at dog level to trap hair and dust. The roof meets the walls flush at the springline, and the curve carries no flat plane anywhere: nothing to set on top, nothing to spill.

Ventilation

Passive, by design. Arched windows sit on both side walls at your dog's height, each proportioned to the wall it lives in, with a low louvre beneath them. A low louvre sits at the foot of each door, and the back wall carries a full louvre field at top, sides and bottom, so air enters low and leaves high rather than sitting in the residence. No fans.

Where it is made

Wood components are milled by a Canadian woodwork shop and delivered to the Atelier as raw parts. Sealing, assembly and finishing are all done at the Atelier in Canada. The brass is designed by the founder and made for PupHut alone, to our own drawings, by a specialist brassware workshop outside Canada.

What it is not built to do

A PupHut is an indoor dog residence with crate functionality for suitable dogs and households. It is not escape-proof, not chew-proof, not scratch-proof, not travel-rated and not made for outdoor use, and it is not a behavioural-training crate. Wood, finish, bedding and hardware will not survive a determined chewer. A dog who panics when confined, who is escape-prone, or who is not already comfortable being crated is not a good match for this residence, and we would rather say so here than sell you one.

Care

The door panels lift out by hand for cleaning — no tools, no visible fixings, and nothing a dog can work loose, because the fit is geometry rather than hardware. Maple and brass ask for a soft cloth and very little else. The brass will darken where hands and paws meet it most, and it can be brought back to bright whenever you choose. Written care guidance comes with every commission.

Figures we are not publishing yet

Door opening height is still being confirmed ahead of a scheduled front-frame review. It will appear here once settled, and not before. Finished weight is not published on this page, or anywhere on the website — for delivery and freight planning, ask the Concierge for the current confirmed figure for your size.
