A Vegan Dog Crate? What a PupHut Residence Is Made Of
The finish system is zero to low-VOC, and we would rather hand you the numbers than the adjective.
What it is made of
The finishes, with the figures
- Zero-VOC primer and paint for the colour coat, with no clear coat over it
- Waterborne, low-VOC clear sealants, 59 g per litre on a natural maple outside and 62 inside
- The clear sealants fully cure in 10 to 14 days. Every residence rests at least 14 days after its last coat before it leaves the Atelier
- Brass left bare, with no lacquer
A natural maple exterior is sealed with a waterborne, low-VOC clear at 59 grams of volatile organic compounds per litre, and every interior, the surface your dog actually lives against, with one at 62, measured on the material as supplied.
The Bed
The Mattress is natural latex, and The Quilted Liner is cotton quilted over flax. There is no wool, down, leather or silk anywhere in The Bed.
Questions
Are the materials vegan?
We do not use animal-derived materials, and there's no wool, down, leather or silk anywhere in The Bed. The residence carries no leather, wool, silk, or down, anywhere.
Is the finish on a PupHut residence low-VOC?
The system is zero to low-VOC, and here are the figures. Where a residence is painted, the colour coat is a zero-VOC primer and paint, with no clear coat over it. A natural maple exterior is sealed with a waterborne, low-VOC clear at 59 grams of volatile organic compounds per litre, and every interior with one at 62, measured on the material as supplied. The clear sealants reach full cure in ten to fourteen days, and no residence leaves the Atelier until at least fourteen days have passed since its final coat.
What is a PupHut residence made of?
Solid maple frames cut from rift- and quarter-sawn boards, maple panels floating in a groove, an engineered maple floor set into the solid maple base, and a roof of bent laminated maple. Latches, hinges and the nameplate are solid polished brass rather than plated. Door windows on a Private Residence, and the Landing, the floor tray, if you choose one, are recycled cast acrylic. The latch, and the bolt where one is ordered, are fixed into brass threaded inserts, and the hinges are fixed with brass wood screws into solid maple. The roof is fixed with stainless steel screws, and the base is braced with steel corners.
The longer story
How it is built, the maple, the brass and the finish, is its own story in Craft & Materials. Every figure is on Specifications.
